KSPCD003 Bunny Lee and Friends - Good NewsAfter two heavyweight dub excursions, firstly from Bunny Lee & The Agrovators and then from The Breadwinners, King Spinna’s third release is an all-singing affair. In fact it was suggested by Bunny Lee himself – “Why you don’t put out the vocals?” he asked on first hearing “Dub Will Change Your Mind” which featured all the B-side versions from this set. It turned out to be an excellent suggestion; Bunny worked with every Jamaican singer of note during the period from 1967 when he first made his debut as a producer through to the mid / late Seventies. Indeed, the roll call of great singers Bunny has worked with who are not included on this compilation – the likes of Slim Smith, Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, Pat Kelly, Dennis Brown, Max Romeo, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, Linval Thompson, Barry Brown etc. – is considerably longer than the list of artists included here.

Bunny Lee Good News Track CommentaryNevertheless, this release features nine great singers ranging from veterans such as Owen Gray, Derrick Morgan and Jackie Edwards to vocalists who emerged later like Cornell Campbell, John Holt, Ronnie Davis, Leroy Smart, Joy White and Johnny Clarke. The tracks included on this set were originally released between the years 1975 to 1978 and range in subject matter from straightforward love songs to socially aware roots and reality themes with all the singers proving themselves equally adept at the different styles.

The tracks are sequenced in exactly the same order as their dub versions on the CD issue of “Dub Will Change Your Mind”.

Every year in April Royal Mail announces its new prices, which usually means price increases. We’ve managed to absorb these for the past two years but finally we’re having to pass on this year’s increases. This won’t have much impact on customers buying CDs only but since the postage rates are based on weight the increase will be felt much more by customers buying LPs, in particular overseas customers.

After two heavyweight dub excursions from The Agrovators and The Breadwinners, this one is an all-singing affair. In fact it’s the companion vocal volume to our first release “Dub Will Change Your Mind” and the tracks are sequenced in exactly the same order. Spanning the years 1975 to 1978 it features singers who were already music industry veterans at the time such as Jackie Edwards, Derrick Morgan and Owen Gray alongside more contempory artists such as Cornell Campbell, Ronnie Davis, Johnny Clarke, John Holt, Joy White and Leroy Smart.

So who are “The Breadwinners”? The Breadwinners are Alan Redfern and anyone else he happens to work with. Al is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, recording / mixing engineer and producer. Sometimes it seems it would be easier to list the instruments he doesn’t play – the album features him on drums, bass, keyboards, guitar, percussion and harp – that’s harp as in “harp” not “mouth harp”. Whilst he plays the majority of the instruments on the album he is also joined by several guest musicians, most notably the sax and flute player known only as “Stally” who features prominently throughout, weaving his magic with his languid, lyrical style – nothing flash, just pure niceness!

In June 2012 the legendary Jamaican deejay Big Youth paid a visit to the Bakery Studio to voice a couple of Al’s rhythms exclusively for King Spinna and The Breadwinners. On this CD edition of “Dubs Unlimited” we present as a bonus track a 7 minute discomix of “Joy”. Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!

For the avoidance of doubt this official King Spinna release is NOT the same as the CD-R version of the album which we have already been selling on our website. The CD-R contains early mixes of the tracks, whereas the King Spinna release features brand new mixes with lots of overdubs – brass, flute, harmonica and vocals. The new analogue mixes give the album a warmth and richness, especially in the bottom end, which is lacking on the CD-R version.

The album has been totally re-sequenced, and professionally mastered by the one and only Kevin Metcalfe at The Soundmasters, London.

This vinyl edition of “Dubs Unlimited” is that rare beast, the Triple A “All Analogue Album”, recorded on analogue multitrack, mixed to quarter inch analogue tape and cut direct to the lathe – not a ProTool in sight!

The CD-R contains early mixes of the tracks, whereas the King Spinna release features brand new mixes with lots of overdubs – brass, flute, harmonica and vocals.
